The Problem
For my User Interface Design & Development class, we were tasked with designing an app of our choice. My concept, WanderQuest, is an scavenger hunt app aimed at travelers.
The problem I aimed to solve was that there aren’t enough fun and immersive ways for travelers to engage with and learn more about the place they are visiting.
I love traveling. I love the thrill of going somewhere new and seeing what else is out there. However, sometimes just walking from place to place can get boring, repetitive, or even overwhelming.
App Goals
- Let users tailor their itinerary based on their interests.
- Provide an easy way for users to document their travel experience.
- Increase the accessibility of accurate and engaging information about different locations.
- Enhance the overall satisfaction of the user’s travel experience.
Final Deliverable
Discovery and Analysis
Contextual Inquiry
The discovery phase started with conducting a contextual inquiry to understand user behavior in new locations. For this, I took three peers to a park that they had never been to before and one to an apple orchard, and observed them as they interacted in a new location. After that, I asked them questions about their experience along with general questions about travel.
Empathy Map
Based on the responses of the contextual inquiry, I started refining the target audience for this app. I created an empathy map to help understand the perspective of the user.
Journey Map
I created a journey map of the user’s current travel experience. I used this journey map to help pinpoint opportunities for the app to help these users have a more enjoyable experience.
After this, I conducted a competitive analysis of journaling and scavenger hunt apps.
Specifying Requirements
Functional Requirements
In this phase of the process, I worked to specify the requirements and flow of the app. I defined the core features of the app, started mapping out what they would do, and how they would benefit the user.
User Flows
With an understanding of the functional requirements, I created user flows for the main features: functions of the app; completing a scavenger hunt, documenting experiences in the journal feature, and inviting friends to collaborate on a journal entry.
Preliminary Design
Design Patterns
I began the design phase after the user flows were complete. Based on all of the previous research and findings, I started selecting design patterns that would enhance usability. These included a blue map dot for the user’s current location, a bottom nav bar, an invite friends pop-up, a search bar, and tags for scavenger hunts.
